NEW LIFE FOR PARK THEATRE
Since it’s just a short #50 bus ride from False Creek South to the centre of Cambie Village, aka Cambie at West 19th, many neighbours were chuffed to learn that the now-closed Park Theatre is to reopen. Announced on October 26, one day after Cineplex closed the 84-year-old Park, the new owners are a consortium of film buff investors and filmmakers identified by the Vancouver Sun as “big names in the movie industry”. They are also known as “the Rio team”.

Don’t expect The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Park. That will still be the preserve of the Rio, costumes, cannabis, and all. But the Park also does not intend to run the cash grab movies that bankroll the mainstream industry.

As its new owners explain, this old/new venue will provide a “quality, cinematic experience.” Could anything be more sedate than that?

REPLAN UPDATE
Robyn Chan, RePlan Project Manager
Meetings with City of Vancouver
RePlan staff and leadership continue to meet regularly with City staff and Arup, the consulting team leading the development of a framework for community planning. RePlan has provided Arup with community-based planning principles; we expect the development framework to include many of the characteristics important to community members, including a geographic mix of incomes and housing across the neighbourhood, accommodating an aging population, character of community and greenspace, and impact on residents.

The development framework is expected to go to Council in March or April 2026.

We also met with the Director of Non-Market Housing Development at the City to discuss the ongoing work on Councillor Kirby-Yung’s 2024 motion related to community housing trusts and co-ops.

Meeting with Provincial Ministers
RePlan staff recently met with our MLA, Finance Minister Brenda Bailey, and with Housing Minister Christine Boyle, to discuss the False Creek South Community Housing Trust and its potential to develop new affordable housing in False Creek South.

Community Housing Trust Info Session
On October 15, Community Housing Trust staff hosted an information session on the recent activities of the CHT, including our new membership structure and upcoming opportunities to run for the Board. The session was recorded, and the video is available by request.

If you are interested in joining the Trust as a member and/or running for the Board, please reach out to *email is hidden, JavaScript is required* for more information.

READERS WRITE

Re: Shellfish Gardens Coming To False Creek, Chris Shelton writes:

Ask the City for a map of all sewage pipes that flow into False Creek. Count the number of boats that flush their heads (ie, marine toilets) into False Creek. False Creek is too polluted to eat shellfish grown there.

Upstart and Crow
MORE THAN A BOOKSTORE

The 38th annual Vancouver Writers Fest at Granville Island has come and gone, but the book stores and clubs that sustain it (and are sustained by it) carry on.

What is rapidly becoming one of the best book stores in town is Upstart and Crow on Granville Island. Not just sellers of books, co-owners Ian Gill and Zoe Grams are true bibliophiles who seem to want everyone else to be so as well.

Reading itself is usually a solitary act, but discussion among the readers can amplify the satisfaction derived from reading. Upstart and Crow often facilitates this.  One such event is the launching of Razing Palestine by Leila Marsh. This anthology, subtitled “Punishing Solidarity and Dissent in Canada”, will be front and centre at the bookstore on November 20, 6 pm.
