The Carney administration’s new housing agency – Build Canada Homes – plans to focus on building affordable homes, leveraging efficiencies in factory-built homes, modular housing, and mass timber to build faster on public lands. With an initial capitalization of $13 billion, the new agency will partner with the private sector for delivery that prioritizes using Canadian materials.
Build Canada Homes uses an income-based approach to housing, aiming for housing to cost less than 30 percent of household’s before-tax income, which is an approach that moves away from market-based metrics.
None of the initial pilot sites are in BC, but this may open opportunities for the non-profit housing sector that already holds land in the province.
