In Attendance: Christine Boyle
On Non-Market Housing…
- City has an important role to play around land, zoning, and affordable housing grants.
- Use city-owned land to build more co-op and non-profit housing without displacement.
- Planning schools and housing in tandem. Ensure that school land is retained in public hands.
On The Role of Developers in the City’s Built Form…
- Pre-zone areas for the community housing sector, which would reduce cost barriers for building new non-profit housing. Cost of rezoning could be used towards subsidizing rents.
- Community housing sector is more likely to get senior level funding if the zoning is already in place.
On Tenant Protection and Housing Protection…
- Pegging rents to median rent income.
- Best assurance in terms of enforcing Tenant Protection policies is who gets elected.
- Retain and expand co-ops through adding more units to existing co-ops or building more co-ops.
On The Future of False Creek South…
- Work directly with leaders in the community and residents who are experts of their neighborhood.
- Swing housing so that people can continue to live in the neighborhood.
- Ensure that residents have access to right size housing, as determined by residents themselves.
On False Creek Waters…
- Prevention and mitigation approach for sea level rise; prevention through lowering emissions city-wide, and mitigation through adaptation.
- Much of the debris and derelict boats are from people who were displaced from housing or don’t have any other housing option. We need more outreach for these people to connect people to services.
- Expand public washrooms throughout the city to address the issue of human waste in the Creek.
Local School
- School board, city council, and province need to be having these discussions together.
- We need to be planning further into the future.
